Trigger Points in the Back: Symptoms and Chiropractic Solutions

What is a trigger point?

A trigger point is a small, highly sensitive spot within a muscle that stays involuntarily contracted. Pressing on it can cause pain not just at that spot, but in nearby or even distant areas — something known as referred pain.

Typical symptoms of a back trigger point

It usually feels like a hard, tender "knot" with a deep ache that's sometimes mistaken for joint pain. It often limits certain movements, worsens with stress or cold, and shows up as stiffness after waking up or sitting in the same position for too long.

Why they develop

Muscle overuse, prolonged poor posture, stress, insufficient rest, and repetitive movements all encourage trigger points to form. They can also develop as a protective response after an injury or an imbalance somewhere else in the body.

Chiropractic solutions: release and prevention

Chiropractic care combines an assessment of spinal mobility with soft-tissue release techniques applied directly to the trigger point, helping to "deactivate" it and reduce pain. Correcting the joint restrictions that overload that muscle in the first place also helps prevent the trigger point from coming back.

Frequently asked questions

Is a trigger point the same as a muscle knot? They're related, but not identical — the trigger point is a very specific spot within a tight, knotted muscle that causes pain when pressed.

Does trigger point treatment hurt? There can be brief discomfort while pressure is applied to the area, usually followed by a feeling of relief.

Can I treat it myself at home? Local heat, gentle stretching, and self-massage with a ball can help, though persistent trigger points are best assessed by a professional.

When should I see a professional? If the pain is intense, doesn't improve within a couple of weeks, or keeps coming back, it's worth getting evaluated.
