Back Pain: Causes, Warning Signs, and How Chiropractic Care Can Help
Léa Guido
A very common complaint
Most people experience back pain at some point in their lives. It can show up suddenly, after an awkward movement or a poor night's sleep, or build up gradually from postural habits maintained over time.
Common causes
Frequent causes include prolonged poor posture (at the computer or looking down at a phone), lack of physical activity, strain from lifting, accumulated stress, and, in some cases, structural changes in the spine.
When should you be concerned?
Most episodes of back pain are mechanical in origin and improve with appropriate care. That said, pay special attention if the pain comes with fever, unexplained weight loss, tingling or weakness in the legs, or loss of bladder or bowel control — in those cases, see a doctor without delay.
How chiropractic care can help
A chiropractic assessment looks for the mechanical source of the pain: movement restrictions, muscular imbalances, or postural issues. From there, targeted adjustments, combined with exercise and postural recommendations, help reduce pain and prevent it from coming back.
Frequently asked questions
Does back pain always require an X-ray? Not always. In most mechanical cases, a clinical assessment is enough to guide treatment.
Is it normal for the pain to change intensity during the day? Yes, it commonly varies with activity, stress, or how long you've held a certain posture.
How long does typical treatment take? It depends on the cause and how long the pain has been present, but many patients see gradual improvement over several weeks.
Can I keep exercising if I have back pain? Generally yes, adjusting the intensity and type of exercise to your specific situation.
When should I see a professional? If the pain lasts more than a few days, is severe, or comes with any of the warning signs mentioned above.
