Herniated disc

What is a derniated disc?

A herniated disc occurs when all or part of a disc in the spine is forced to pass through a weakened part of the disc. This can put pressure on nearby nerves or the spinal cord. An intervertebral disc contains a soft, jelly-like substance in the center (nucleus) contained in a stronger, more elastic covering (ring). A herniated disc occurs when part of the core exits through a crack in the ring.

Symptoms of disc herniation

  • Pain on one side of the body: The pain may radiate from the affected area to other parts of the body.
  • Stinging pain: In the lower back, pain may radiate to the leg, hip, or buttocks.
  • Numbness and tingling: It can be felt in specific areas of the body, depending on the location of the hernia.
  • Muscle weakness: There may be weakness in the muscles that are innervated by the affected nerves.
  • Pain in the neck and upper extremities: If the hernia is in the cervical region, the pain can radiate to the shoulder, arm, and fingers.
  • Difficulty moving: The movements can be painful, especially after sitting or standing for long periods of time.

Types of disc herniation

  • Disc protrusion: Deformation of the fibrous ring due to the impact of the nucleus pulposus against it. At this stage, the fibrous ring has not yet broken.
  • Prolapse: Rupture of the nucleus pulposus through the fibrous ring, but without crossing the anterior or posterior longitudinal ligament.
  • Extrusion: The nucleus pulposus completely crosses the fibrous ring and the longitudinal ligament, usually the posterior one.
  • Kidnapping: Rupture of the extruded segment, with displacement of the free fragment to the spinal canal.

Any questions?

What causes a herniated disc?

A herniated disc is generally caused by natural wear and tear of the discs. This process is known as disc degeneration. It can also be caused by sudden injuries or efforts, such as lifting heavy objects incorrectly.

How long does it take to recover from a herniated disc?

The recovery time varies depending on the severity of the hernia and the treatment. Many people get better in weeks to months with conservative treatment. In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary.

Is surgery necessary to treat a herniated disc?

Surgery is necessary only in severe cases where conservative treatment has not been successful or if there are serious symptoms such as loss of bladder or bowel control, significant weakness in the affected muscles, or severe pain that is not relieved by other treatments.

What treatments are available?

There is no cure, but treatments include medications, physical therapy, regular exercise, and stress management techniques.

How is a herniated disc diagnosed?

It is diagnosed through a physical exam, medical history review, and imaging tests such as x-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), electromyography (EMG), and myelography.

What can I do to prevent a herniated disc?

To help prevent a herniated disc, it's important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, exercise regularly, maintain good posture, avoid lifting heavy objects incorrectly, and maintain a healthy weight.
