The most common questions about chiropractic and its practice

What is your background and experience as a chiropractor?

I am a graduate of the Barcelona College of Chiropractic in 2021 after completing a 6-year career. I started my first two years of studying at IFEC in France and then decided to move to Spain. During my training, I also had the opportunity to work as a technique teacher and clinical supervisor at the Barcelona College of Chiropractic.

After obtaining my diploma, I worked in a chiropractic practice in Barcelona, where I was able to apply my knowledge and skills in chiropractic care. In addition, I have attended numerous chiropractic seminars and courses both during my studies and after graduating. This has allowed me to expand my knowledge and combine a variety of techniques to provide each patient with a personalized experience and benefit from chiropractic adjustments.

Some of the adjustment techniques I use include:
  • SOT (Sacred Occipital Technique)
  • Applied Kinesiology
  • Gonstead
  • TBM (Total Body Modification)
  • Toggle Recoil-Hole in One Technique
  • Webster Technique

Each of these techniques has its own characteristics and approaches, and I adapt them to the individual needs of each patient. My goal is to provide comprehensive and effective chiropractic care to help restore balance and promote health and well-being in every person I serve. If you have any specific questions about the techniques I use or are interested in learning more, do not hesitate to ask me.

What types of stress affect our bodies and how do we adapt to them?

Our bodies constantly face different types of stress to keep us in an optimal state. There are three main types of stress we face:

  • Physical stress: This type of stress can be caused by accidents, bumps, falls, lifting heavy objects incorrectly, incorrect postures for long periods of time, childbirth, and elite sports. Our body adapts to this stress by responding to healing and repairing affected tissues, strengthening and adjusting to prevent future injuries.
  • Chemical stress: In our modern lifestyle, we are exposed to a variety of toxic substances in our diet and environment. The consumption of processed foods, preservatives, fertilizers, environmental pollution, as well as the use of beauty and cleaning products, contribute to this chemical stress. Our body adapts through detoxification processes and elimination of these substances to maintain a healthy internal balance.
  • Emotional stress: This type of stress is caused by human relationships, financial worries, emotional exhaustion in the family, work, relationships, difficulty managing child care, and relationships with friends. Our body responds to emotional stress through mechanisms such as the release of stress hormones and the activation of the nervous system. It's important to find healthy ways to manage emotional stress, such as social support, therapy, and relaxation techniques.

It's essential to recognize these different types of stress and understand how our body adapts to them. Chiropractic can play an important role in helping the body adapt to and recover from stress, by improving nervous system function and promoting balance and overall health.

What recognition is chiropractic and its development in Spain?

Chiropractic is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a global health profession, ranking third after conventional medicine and dentistry.

Although chiropractic has its origins in the United States, it has been widely developed in advanced countries such as Australia and Europe. In these countries, numerous studies have demonstrated the benefits of chiropractic for the health and well-being of diverse populations.

In Spain, chiropractic is experiencing gradual growth with the support of Spanish Chiropractic Association (AEQ). It is essential to ensure that the chiropractor you go to is a member of the AEQ, since this association is the only entity that guarantees chiropractic diplomas and regulates the profession in Spain. This growing presence and support of the AEQ provides greater confidence and security to those seeking chiropractic services in Spain. As chiropractic consolidates in the country, more people are expected to benefit from its holistic approaches to health and wellness.

What is chiropractic and why should I consider chiropractic maintenance?

Chiropractic is a health profession that focuses on promoting the proper functioning of the nervous system and the body as a whole. Its goal is not only to alleviate symptoms, but to achieve a healthy body free of nerve interference. It is recommended to follow chiropractic maintenance to maintain and improve current health, as well as to prevent relapses and stressors that may affect the nervous system and the body in general. Receiving regular chiropractic care seeks to maintain proper spinal alignment and strengthen the body to prevent future complications.

Importance of preventive chiropractic care for maintaining health

Pain is an alarm signal that the body emits when something isn't working properly. However, it is possible that our body experiences malfunctions for years without us realizing it, since it apparently continues to work well. It is only when an overload occurs in our nervous system that an alarm is triggered in the form of pain or symptoms. These overloads can be caused by different factors, such as physical, emotional and chemical stress.

Health cannot be defined solely as the absence of pain or symptoms. Adopting a preventive approach involves making proactive decisions that allow us to limit the disease and optimize our health before symptoms appear, which requires a longer recovery process.

In this regard, preventive chiropractic care plays a fundamental role. By seeking regular chiropractic care, we can address body imbalances and dysfunctions before they manifest as pain or obvious symptoms. By maintaining a healthy nervous system and proper spinal alignment, we can promote optimal body function, prevent future problems, and improve our overall quality of life.

Requirements and training process for becoming a chiropractor

To become a chiropractor, it is necessary to obtain a university degree in Chiropractic and a Doctorate in Chiropractic, after completing a program of study that lasts between 5 and 7 years. Both titles are recognized by the European Council for Chiropractic Education (ECCE).

The beginning of the career is similar to that of medicine, since disciplines such as anatomy, radiology, epidemiology, nutrition and pathophysiology are studied, but with a specific focus on each type of population, including babies, pregnant women, the elderly and athletes. From the first year and throughout the career, knowledge in chiropractic techniques is also acquired.

The last two years of the career are dedicated to the practical part, where students become interns in the school clinic under the supervision of teachers. During this period, students treat patients of various ages and profiles, such as athletes, the elderly, adolescents and babies, with the objective of obtaining a complete experience and learning to apply appropriate techniques before graduating.

Chiropractic adjustments

The most common questions about chiropractic adjustments

What does the 'crack' sound produce during chiropractic adjustments?

The 'crack' sound that occurs during chiropractic adjustments is not the result of bones breaking. Actually, this sound is due to the cavitation phenomenon, which occurs when a synovial fluid present in the joints is put under pressure and causes the vaporization of gases, such as nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide. This sudden release of gases is what generates the characteristic sound.

Importantly, the 'crack' sound does not necessarily indicate that the adjustment was successful or beneficial. This sound is simply a natural consequence of the cavitation of the synovial fluid and is not directly related to the proper functioning of the joint.

In addition, once the sound is produced, it cannot be reproduced immediately, since the gases are naturally reorganized and re-dissolved in the joint fluid as the pressure increases.

It is common for joint clicks to also occur when bending down or moving the hands, and this is due to the same phenomenon of cavitation of synovial fluid in the joints. However, it's important to note that this noise is not harmful in and of itself.

It's important to note that deliberately crunching joints, such as the fingers, is not recommended, as it can lead to dependency and is not related to the benefits of chiropractic adjustments performed by a trained professional.

If you have any additional questions or would like to learn more about the 'crack' sound during chiropractic adjustments, we recommend that you consult your chiropractor, who can provide you with a more detailed and personalized explanation.

Are Chiropractic Adjustments Painful?

No, chiropractic adjustments aren't painful. In fact, most people experience a sense of relaxation and reduced tension after chiropractic adjustments.

Chiropractic adjustments focus primarily on the spine and are performed using high-speed, low-amplitude impulses that stimulate nerve receptors in the body. These adjustments are designed to restore balance and proper alignment to the spine, which can alleviate pressure and nerve interference.

During the adjustment, you may hear a sound similar to a click. This sound is due to the release of gases in the joints, as a result of the change in pressure during adjustment. It's important to note that this sound is not indicative of pain or any joint damage.

Each person can experience the sensations of chiropractic adjustments differently. Some may feel an immediate sense of relief, while others may experience a mild feeling of pressure or stretching. In general, most people find chiropractic adjustments comfortable and beneficial to their overall well-being.

It's important to communicate openly with your chiropractor and express any concerns or sensitivities you may have. They are able to adapt settings according to individual needs and preferences, ensuring a comfortable and safe experience.

Remember that chiropractic is a safe and effective practice for improving the health and functioning of the nervous system, without causing unnecessary pain. If you have any additional questions or would like to know more about chiropractic adjustments, don't hesitate to consult your chiropractor.

What reactions may I experience after receiving a chiropractic adjustment?

After receiving a chiropractic adjustment, it's possible to experience different reactions in your body. These reactions are normal and are part of the healing and adjustment process of the nervous system. Here are some possible answers you might experience:

  • Feeling of relief: Many people experience a sense of immediate relief from body tensions after a chiropractic adjustment. You may feel as if a large weight has been lifted off your shoulders and notice greater muscle relaxation.
  • Internal changes: You may not notice immediate changes in your body, but that doesn't mean the care isn't working. Chiropractic adjustments focus on treating the underlying causes of nervous system problems, which can take time for results to become apparent. Your body will start to work more efficiently and you'll be one step closer to the healing process.
  • Temporary fatigue and discomfort: Some people may experience fatigue, soreness, and general discomfort after chiropractic care. These symptoms are usually temporary and usually last for the first 24 hours. These are signs that your body is adjusting and releasing nerve interference. It's important to listen to your body during this time and get enough rest to allow the healing process to run its course.

Each person can have a different experience after chiropractic care, as each body reacts in a unique way. If you have any specific concerns or questions about the reactions you're experiencing, we recommend that you consult your chiropractor, who can provide you with additional guidance and support.

Remember that these changes and reactions are part of your recovery process and that your chiropractor is there to help you every step of the way to better health and well-being.
