Carpal tunnel: pain up to the shoulder — causes and solutions
Léa Guido
What is carpal tunnel syndrome?
It occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the wrist, causing pain, tingling, and numbness in the hand that can sometimes also be felt in the arm and shoulder.
Symptoms
Tingling and numbness in the fingers (especially the thumb, index, and middle fingers), loss of grip strength, and, in advanced cases, pain that radiates up the arm.
Common causes
Repetitive wrist strain (keyboards, hand tools), genetic factors, hormonal changes, and certain conditions such as diabetes can all contribute to it.
How chiropractic care helps
Manual adjustments to the wrist, elbow, and cervical spine can improve mobility and reduce pressure on the nerve, complementing other measures like wrist splints or active breaks at work.
Frequently asked questions
Does carpal tunnel get worse over time? If left unaddressed, symptoms can progress, which is why it's important to seek care early.
Is surgery necessary? Only in advanced cases; many people improve with conservative care.
Are there alternatives to medical treatment? Yes, options like chiropractic care, physiotherapy, and ergonomic changes can help as a complement.
