Disc dehydration: symptoms and chiropractic solutions
Léa Guido
What is disc dehydration?
The intervertebral discs are made up largely of water, and over the years they gradually lose some of that fluid content, which reduces their shock-absorbing ability and can alter the height and mobility between vertebrae. It's a natural part of the spine aging process.
Most common symptoms
Stiffness, especially in the morning, a feeling of reduced flexibility in the back, discomfort that increases after staying in the same position for a long time, and in some cases radiating pain if the affected disc presses on a nearby nerve root.
Factors that speed up the process
Besides age, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, general dehydration, sustained poor posture, and repeated overload on the spine can all speed up water loss in the discs.
How chiropractic care helps
Chiropractic adjustments help improve mobility in the affected vertebrae, promote better load distribution across the spine, and, alongside specific exercises, help maintain disc function for as long as possible.
Frequently asked questions
Can disc dehydration be reversed? Not completely, since it's part of normal aging, but its progression can be slowed and symptoms well managed.
Is it the same as a herniated disc? No, although they're related. Dehydration is water loss from the disc; a herniation is a displacement of disc material that may or may not be connected to this process.
What exercises help take care of the discs? Walking, swimming, and core stabilization exercises are usually good options, always adapted to each case.
When should I see a professional? If the pain is persistent, radiates into the legs or arms, or limits your daily activities, it's worth getting evaluated.
