Neck contracture: causes, symptoms, and solutions
Léa Guido
What is a neck contracture?
A neck contracture is an involuntary, sustained contraction of the neck muscles that causes stiffness, pain, and limited movement. It usually builds up gradually, though it can also appear suddenly after an awkward movement or a bad night's sleep.
Most common causes
Stress, sustained screen-facing postures, repetitive movements, cold drafts, and poor rest are common triggers. Muscle weakness from a sedentary lifestyle also plays a role.
Symptoms
Localized pain that can radiate toward the shoulder or head, a "knot" or tight feeling to the touch, difficulty turning or tilting the neck, and sometimes an associated headache.
How chiropractic care can help
A chiropractor assesses the mobility of the cervical vertebrae and surrounding muscles, and combines gentle adjustments, muscle release techniques, and exercise guidance to reduce tension and help prevent the contracture from coming back.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use heat or ice on a neck contracture? Heat usually helps relax the muscles, while ice can help if there's recent inflammation. If in doubt, your chiropractor can guide you.
How long does a neck contracture last? With proper care, many improve within a few days, though some can linger for weeks if the underlying cause isn't addressed.
Can stress cause neck contractures? Yes, it's one of the most common causes, since ongoing stress increases muscle tension in the neck and shoulders.
When should I see a professional? If the pain doesn't improve in a few days, is very intense, or comes with tingling down the arm, it's worth getting evaluated.
